Hayley and Tommy’s Muscular Dystrophy Home Makeover
Custom Heat have recently been working with a local family in Rugby, Hayley and her 11 year old son Tommy.
In 2012, at the age of just 6, Tommy was diagnosed with the muscle wasting disease Muscular Dystrophy. At the time of diagnosis his type Limb Girdle MD2E was so rare that only 1 other person was known to have it in the UK.
Hayley had to give up her full time job for an International Development charity as Tommy’s condition deteriorated, and threw herself into fundraising for the charity Muscular Dystrophy UK to help fund critical research. In just 18 months she and Tommy raised £11,000.
Which brings us to the makeover!
Amongst other adaptations to help Tommy retain his independence a through floor lift has been installed from the dining room to Tommy’s new bedroom, the front door and internal door frames have been widened to allow wheelchair access, and a wet room has been installed for Tommy, with access from his new bedroom. The council is funding crucial adaptations to their home but this will not cover the expense of redecorating, carpets, and new furniture for the now smaller rooms in the house.
The local community have come out in force to help. Local businesses have donated a new kitchen, wallpaper, curtains, electrical work and much more!
Custom Heat have fitted a new Worcester Bosch boiler with no charge for 3 days labour for this community based transformation.
