How much money can smart controls save you?

25th Sep 2022 3 minute read

Simple to use and quick to install, smart controls allow you to have complete control of the running of your home whether you’re there or not. They enable users to take proactive steps to drive down their energy bills by only heating the home to a determined temperature, or powering appliances, when it is needed.  Meaning less waste that hits you in the pocket and compromises the environment.

How much money could a smart thermostat save you?

Different manufacturers claim different savings, ranging from 8.4% (Google Nest) to up to 31% (Tado) on your energy bills, and of course, it depends on the level of control and the temperatures you decide to set your smart thermostat to. With energy bills on the rise and most family households set to spend on average £3,492.90 each year* a 10% saving equates to around £350 each year, which makes the installation of a smart thermostat a worthy, long-term investment.

What temperature is best to set my smart thermostat to?

Obviously, it comes down to preference, however the WHO recommends a room temperature in the winter of 18 degrees. To save energy and drive down your bills, you should aim for around 18 – 21 degrees, and the energy required to do this will vary according to how well insulated and glazed your house is and the types of radiators you have. Turning down your thermostat by just one degree could save you over £100 each year.

Smart plugs and your electric bills

Installing smart plugs to control key appliances in your home could save you a fortune on your energy bill, taking electronics off standby and turning everything that doesn’t need to be on completely off while you are out.  Smart plugs also enable you to set timers on key appliances to run during certain times of the day to minimise waste but continue to run your house.  Devices, even when left on standby, will draw power and add up to a considerable chunk of your electricity bill.  Even better, applying smart plugs to outlets and sockets that are hard to reach will also remove the hassle of pulling out furniture to control the appliances that are connected to it.

Key appliances we recommend operating with a smart plug:

  • Microwaves
  • Televisions
  • Device chargers
  • Slow cookers/crock pots
  • Lamps/night lights
  • Garden lights
  • Lawn sprinklers
  • Computers/laptops
  • Heaters
