Is Your Home Ready for the Next Heatwave?

Keep Your Home Cool

UK summers are getting hotter  and this year could be the hottest yet. Here’s how to keep your family cool and comfortable before the heat arrives.

The Met Office has issued its most serious early heatwave warning in years. Long-range modelling suggests there is a significant probability of temperatures exceeding 38°C in southern England multiple times between June and August 2026 conditions closely resembling those that preceded the record-breaking 40.3°C recorded at Coningsby, Lincolnshire in July 2022. That heatwave caused an estimated 2,803 excess deaths in England. This summer, forecasters warn, could be even hotter.

The uncomfortable truth is that most British homes simply aren’t built for this.

Why UK Homes Struggle in the Heat

British housing was designed for a cold, damp climate. Thick walls, heavy insulation and double glazing all brilliant in winter, become traps for heat in summer. South-facing rooms, loft conversions and conservatories can reach dangerously high temperatures on a hot afternoon, and once a home has absorbed heat through the day, it takes hours to cool down overnight.

Only around 5% of UK homes have air conditioning, compared with nearly 90% in the United States. While the government’s new Warm Homes Plan (published January 2026) sets out an ambitious programme to upgrade ageing housing stock, its primary focus remains energy bills and insulation with no dedicated component for summer overheating. In short, the responsibility for keeping your home cool rests firmly with you.

Signs Your Home Is Already Struggling

If any of these sound familiar, your home is likely overheating:

  • You can’t sleep comfortably upstairs even with windows open
  • Certain rooms become unusable during the afternoon
  • You’re running fans constantly but still feel stuffy
  • Working from home becomes genuinely difficult on warm days
  • The heat lingers well into the evening with no sign of dropping

These aren’t minor inconveniences, prolonged exposure to indoor heat has real health consequences, particularly for children, elderly relatives and anyone with an underlying health condition.

5 Easy Ways to Stay Cooler at Home

1. Keep curtains and blinds closed during peak sunlight. Up to 87% of a room’s heat gain in summer comes through the windows. Closing blinds, especially on south and west-facing windows, before temperatures peak (typically between 11am and 4pm) makes a substantial difference.

2. Set your air conditioning between 21–23°C for maximum comfort. It can be tempting to lower the temperature as much as possible during a heatwave, but setting your air conditioning between 21-23°C provides a comfortable indoor environment while helping to reduce energy consumption and avoid unnecessary strain on the system.

3. Keep windows and doors shut while your air conditioning is running. When windows or doors are left open, warm air can enter your home and force your air conditioning system to work harder. Keeping your home sealed while the unit is operating helps maintain a consistent temperature and improves efficiency.

4. Clean filters regularly for better airflow and efficiency. Dirty filters can restrict airflow, reduce performance and increase running costs. Regular cleaning and routine servicing help ensure your system continues to operate efficiently throughout the warmer months.

5. Upgrade from fans to a professionally installed air conditioning system. While fans can help circulate air, they do not actively cool a room. A professionally installed air conditioning system provides reliable temperature control, helping keep your home comfortable even during prolonged periods of hot weather.

When It’s Time to Consider Air Conditioning

Fans and blinds go a long way but there are situations where they’re simply not enough. If your bedroom regularly becomes too hot for restful sleep, if you work from home and productivity suffers through the summer, or if vulnerable family members struggle with the heat, a professionally installed air conditioning system is worth serious consideration.

Modern systems do far more than cool. They filter and circulate air for improved indoor air quality, can heat your home in winter, and when properly sized and installed are remarkably energy efficient.
